Wind Spreads Controlled Brush Burn near Mulberry

MULBERRY, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say a grass fire burned across more than a tenth of a mile in Madison County.

The blaze began Sunday afternoon after the wind caused a controlled brush burn to spread near Mulberry. Tom Smith of the Madison Township Fire Department says the man who was attending to the fire turned his back for a minute and the flames were caught by the wind, catching the rest of the field on fire.

A witness tells the (Lafayette) Journal and Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1IjANbn ) that the flames quickly spread across the field, which was covered with corn stubble, and into the woods.

Firefighters from five departments were able to contain the fire before it reached nearby homes and propane tanks.

Smith says no one was injured.
