INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A woman with terminal cancer and her same-sex partner have joined a series of lawsuits aimed at stopping Indiana from enforcing its gay marriage ban.
Niki Quasney and Amy Sandler of Munster joined one of those lawsuits this week. They were married in Massachusetts last year.
Court documents say Quasney has stage four ovarian cancer and isn't likely to survive for another year. The suit says the fact that Indiana doesn't recognize their marriage would deprive Sandler and her children of death benefits.
The couple wants a federal judge in Indianapolis to issue a restraining order compelling the state to recognize their marriage in Quasney's anticipated death certificate.
The Indiana attorney general's office says it will defend the state law and that exceptions can't be made on a case-by-case basis.
