Man fires gun at officer while running away from Fort Wayne police

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  A man fleeing from police opened fire at an officer after a traffic stop east of downtown Fort Wayne.

On Saturday, January 30th round 1:52 p.m. the Fort Wayne Police pulled over a vehicle near Lewis Street and Hanna Street.  Soon after the passenger took off running, leading the officer on a chase.

As the officer was chasing the suspect on foot, the suspect began to open fire on the officer about a block east near Lewis Street and Francis Street.  Multiple shell casings were found in that location as the officer returned fire and continue to chase the suspect through an alley north of the street.

The suspect, Charles Antwon Benson, was caught in the alley north of Lewis Street near Harmar Street.

During this time the driver that was pulled over fled the scene.  She later called police and explained she left out of fear and panic, and didn’t want to be implicated in the crime.

Police had the intersection closed while the crime scene was being surveyed and investigated by the the shooting team and Deceive Bureau.

The officer involved is required to give a public safety statement in writing within 72-hours.  Meanwhile the incident is still under investigation.
