9-Month-Old Indiana Boy Dies from Gunshot to Head

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) _ A central Indiana sheriff says a 9-month-old boy who was shot in the head while his father said he was cleaning a handgun has died from his injuries.

Howard County Sheriff Steve Rogers said Friday the Marion County coroner's office informed his department that the boy died Thursday at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

Police say 31-year-old John Hambaugh III told investigators he was sitting Wednesday in the kitchen of an apartment near Kokomo working to clean his gun when it fired. The bullet went through Hambaugh's thigh and struck his son in the head.

Rogers tells the Kokomo Tribune that while the father described the shooting as an accident, his department is treating it as a death investigation.
