FWPD: man set house on fire and threatened to harm himself

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Fort Wayne Police say a man set a house on fire and then threatened officers with a weapon this morning.

Police were called out to a home in the 4500 block of Warsaw Street at just before 10:10 a.m. on a report of suicide note on the front door. Officers found that note and tried to make contact with the man inside using a loud speaker.

After no response, there was an explosion, causing the windows of the home to break and catch the house on fire. Police say a man walked out of the back door of the home holding a gun to his head. Police say they told the man they were there to help and encouraged him to put the gun down, but the man then shot himself in the head.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department was called to the home on a report of a house fire at just before 10:40 a.m.

The was under control in about 20 minutes.
