FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Fort Wayne City Council once again rejected a proposed ordinance that would allow residents in the city to own chickens.

The Journal-Gazette reports that the ordinance, sponsored by Councilman Jason Arp, would have allowed city residents to own up to five hens within an enclosure in the backyard of a single-family property.

The ordinance failed, 7-2.

It’s the second time the ordinance has failed since 2017.

Arp said all five boroughs of New York City allow urban chickens along with Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit and others.

While the council’s vote was preliminary, members will cast final votes at the next meeting on Tuesday at Citizens Square.

A simple majority would be required to pass the proposed ordinance.
