Evansville Reaches Deal for $74M Convention Hotel

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ Evansville's mayor says the city has reached a final development agreement calling for a new $74 million hotel to be built adjacent to the city's convention center.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the project includes a Hilton Doubletree hotel, an apartment tower, retail space and surrounding parking and infrastructure. The $74 million project would include a public investment of about $37.5 million.

But The Evansville Courier & Press reports that a City Council leader is calling for more analysis of the project's financing and a period of public review.

The Evansville Redevelopment Commission will vote on the final agreement Thursday.

Winnecke says he intends to ask the city council for final approval of bond funding for the project on Aug. 26. That would allow for a late 2013 groundbreaking.
