Blind SW Ind. man makes Grand Canyon kayak trip

DUGGER, Ind. (AP): A blind Navy veteran from southwestern Indiana is celebrating the accomplishment of finishing a 226-mile kayaking trip covering the full length of the Grand Canyon.

Lonnie Bedwell of Dugger lost his sight in a hunting accident 16 years ago. He became involved with the Team River Runner veterans group last year and started going on kayaking trips with its members.

Sixteen team members finished the 16-day trip along the Colorado River on Aug. 21.

Bedwell says he was in his own kayak and a team member guided him with voice commands to navigate the river. He's been invited to climb a frozen waterfall in Colorado this winter and might someday go hang-gliding.
