EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – An unmarked cemetery discovered on the grounds of a former Evansville hospital is bigger than researchers first thought.

The Old State Hospital burial site was initially thought to hold 10 to 15 unmarked graves. City Engineer Patrick Keepes says archaeologists now report about 70 graves.

The cemetery was found during research on a project to build a pedestrian bridge across the Lloyd Expressway.

The Board of Public Works has approved moving the remains to Oak Hill Cemetery. The plan is expected to be finalized before the end of the year.

The bodies date from the early 1900s and are likely people who once lived in the Old State Hospital.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will pay 80 percent of the $270,000 cost to move the remains.
