INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indiana Supreme Court says a program that provides alternatives to detention for troubled juveniles will expand to more counties over the next few years.
 
       The court announced Thursday that additional counties joining the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative will be announced in January after the Legislature approved $5.5 million in new funding. Eleven counties have applied to join.
 
       The program began in Marion County in 2006 and already has expanded to Johnson, Porter, Lake, Tippecanoe, Elkhart, Howard and Clark counties.
 
       The initiative developed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation aims to improve outcomes for children in the justice system while ensuring public safety. The court says sometimes children in trouble need secure detention, but other times there are alternatives.
