Northern Ind. Man Pleads Guilty to Scout Leader’s Death

PERU, Ind. (AP): A northern Indiana man is pleading guilty to fatally stabbing a 76-year-old scoutmaster in front of boys he was leading on a nature hike.

Twenty-four-year-old Shane Golitko of Bunker Hill told a Miami County judge on Thursday that he attacked Arthur Anderson of Kokomo in August 2011 during a schizophrenic episode after he stopped taking his medication.

A plea agreement calls for Golitko to plead guilty to murder with the stipulation that he be deemed mentally ill and sentenced to the minimum 45-year prison term. Attorneys say three doctors have diagnosed Golitko as a paranoid schizophrenic.

Authorities say Anderson was stabbed in the neck as he led a hike along the Nickel Plate Trail in Bunker Hill, about 50 miles north of Indianapolis.
