Insanity Defense Planned for Man in Purdue Slaying

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ The new lawyer for a man charged with killing a fellow Purdue University student is planning an insanity defense for his client.

Cody Cousins' attorney, Kirk Freeman, was granted a motion Thursday in which he requested a Tippecanoe Superior Court to pay for a mental evaluation for his client. The Journal & Courier reports Judge Thomas Busch interpreted that as a step toward raising an insanity defense. Freeman confirms that's his intent.

The 23-year-old defendant from Warsaw told Busch last week he was being treated for schizophrenia. Cousins also requested and received a new attorney in Freeman, who's a public defender.

Cousins is accused of fatally shooting and stabbing 21-year-old Andrew Boldt of West Bend, Wisconsin, in January inside a classroom on the West Lafayette campus.
