Old Parking Meters to Raise Funds for Homeless

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A homeless advocacy group in Indianapolis plans to install restored parking meters around downtown Indianapolis where people can donate to the homeless.

WTHR-TV and WISH-TV report the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention and Downtown Indianapolis plan to place about two dozen old, obsolete parking meters throughout downtown Indianapolis to raise funds to support the city's homeless and to educate the public on how they can help.

Coalition executive director Christy Shepard says they hope to raise $40,000 the first year and eventually raise $100,000 a year. The campaign kicked off Friday with a meter-unveiling ceremony.

The money raised will be used by 16 different outreach groups.
