CARMEL, Ind. (AP) _ A stretch of U.S. 31 through the northern suburbs of Indianapolis is reopening after being closed since April.
Department spokesman Nathan Riggs says the section in Carmel is opening Tuesday afternoon, beating a goal of having it ready for traffic before Thanksgiving Day.
The highway was shut down for more than a mile to allow for faster completion of work that includes building interchanges and overpasses as part of a project upgrading it to interstate standards.
Riggs says that two lanes will be open both northbound and southbound, but construction work will continue in that area on building a third lane through next year.
The Carmel project is part of a $1.2 billion reconstruction project for U.S. 31 linking Indianapolis and South Bend.
