Stranger Pays $6k Vet Bill for Injured Indiana Dog

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ An Indiana dog whose owner ordered it euthanized after it was hit by a car is recovering following surgery that was paid for by a stranger.

Cari Reiter's 11-year-old chow, Delilah, was staying with friends last week while Reiter underwent a knee replacement. WNDU reports the dog escaped and was hit by a car.

A stranger took Delilah to an emergency veterinarian, but the injuries to her back legs were severe. Surgery was likely to run $6,000.

Reiter says she couldn't afford the bill and ordered Delilah euthanized.

The man who helped Delilah says he couldn't let that happen. He took her to a Fort Wayne veterinarian and paid for surgery to amputate a leg.

Reiter and Delilah have been reunited. Both are learning to walk again.
