IU Trustees Approve Room, Board Rate Increases

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – Indiana University's trustees have approved room and board rate increases for students on the Bloomington campus.</span>

The Herald-Times reports the increases approved Friday by IU's trustees will bring a 3.2 percent rate increase for the Bloomington campus' most commonly requested room and board package.

IU says that package includes an air-conditioned, double-occupancy room in a mid-amenity residence hall and a standard meal plan. That package currently costs $9,943, but will increase by about $300 starting in the 2015-16 school year.

Trustee Patrick Shoulders took issue with school officials' contention that the rate increases were needed in response to a recent $1 minimum wage increase for IU employees.

Shoulders questioned why a minimum wage increase is used as justification for a rate increase when other wage increases are not.
