INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana utility regulators have ordered an investigation into a power company's investment and maintenance practices after a series of underground explosions sent manhole covers flying into the air in a heavily traveled section of downtown Indianapolis.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission on Friday convened a brief emergency meeting to announce the investigation. Similar probes were conducted in 2011 and 2014 after a series of blasts, including one that rattled the Indiana Statehouse.
Underground explosions caused by electrical arcing shot manhole covers into the air Thursday at a busy intersection and cut power to hundreds of customers. The incident raised concerns about safety as the city prepares to host the men's Final Four next month
IPL officials insist the network is safe and reliable.
