Northern Indiana Man Identified as Suspect Fatally Shot

MONON, Ind. (AP): Authorities say the robbery suspect who was shot dead in a shootout with police was a northern Indiana man.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Kim Riley identified the suspect as 29-year-old Don Oneal Smith of the South Bend/Elkhart area.

He was shot dead Thursday evening in the northern Indiana town of Monon after allegedly robbing a bank in Watseka, Illinois, taking a hostage and leading police on a chase through several northwestern Indiana counties. Monon is about 30 miles north of Lafayette.

Police say officers approached a stolen minivan and Smith opened fire before officers shot and killed him.
