INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana State Board of Education has approved a new letter grading system for schools despite extended debate over procedural rules and deadlines.
A large portion of Thursday's meeting was spent arguing over last-minute changes to the proposed A-F school accountability system that gives equal weight to student growth and performance.
Board members expressed concerns that the changes proposed by the Department of Education have not been open to public comment and could be rejected by the attorney general's office.
The board chose to approve the original language and hold off on any necessary changes until it's settled by state officials.
The decision falls on the same day Republican Gov. Mike Pence is set to announce his decision on a bill that would make significant changes to board membership.
