INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles has admitted to more than 100 overcharges in court documents stemming from a class-action lawsuit alleging that it overcharged motorists by tens of millions of dollars for fees and services.
Marion Superior Court documents say the BMV admits to 112 separate overcharges involving fees charged for dozens of vehicle weight classes.
Plaintiffs' attorney Irwin Levin said Monday the BMV needs to refund $40 million to $50 million he estimates BMV customers lost in the 112 weight-class overcharges.
BMV attorney Carl Hayes says the agency is exploring whether it can “resolve the case in a way that's positive for taxpayers.''
The two sides will try to resolve their differences during an Oct. 19 court-ordered mediation session.
