Fort Wayne City Council to debate elimination of Public Safety Director position

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Republicans on the Fort Wayne City Council are trying again to do away with the city’s Public Safety Director position.

Both of the Council’s democrats are against it, but Republican Paul Ensley, who’s sponsoring the bill, says he wants to save taxpayers money. He brought it up Tuesday night, and tells the Journal Gazette Public Safety Director Rusty York makes more than $160,000 a year that could be spent elsewhere.

Mayor Henry’s administration called the move possibly illegal, since apparently city statutes say the Council can’t make certain changes outside of the annual budget process, which happens in October.

The proposal will still be debated next week.
