CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP): People taking South Shore trains will be able to bring their bicycles with them as part of an upcoming program to accommodate commuters at certain stations.

The service will begin April 2 and will continue through October, but only on weekends that don’t coincide with special events in Chicago. Bikes will be stored on racks on two different South Shore cars.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District General Manager Michael Noland told The (Munster) Times he expects the service to draw people from Chicago to visit places such as the Indiana Dunes State Park.

Though the program will only be offered at stations with high-level platforms, Noland says the agency is taking steps to make all stations bike-friendly.
