FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A grassroots group is hoping to persuade the Fort Wayne City Council to not raise the city’s local income taxes.

Justin Stevens, In-State Director of Americans for Prosperity, tells WOWO News the proposal would be an extra burden on taxpayers.

“We’re not saying whether or not it’s a good project. We’re saying that we should look within the current budget, especially when people are already having to spend an additional 10 cents per gallon for gas.”

Mayor Tom Henry and several Council members say the tax increase is needed to fund the next two phases of the riverfront development project. Stevens says the city should make some cuts to its budget to cover the costs.
