FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Legislation sponsored by an area lawmaker that would require doctors and pharmacists to take an extra step before prescribing opioids could soon become law.

State Representative Ben Smaltz of Auburn says the bill requires those health professionals to check the state’s “INSPECT” database, which keeps track of patients’ controlled-substance prescription history, which should limit the “doctor shopping” that some people do to get more of the drugs than they should have.

“Shutting down drug users’ ability to obtain multiple prescriptions is one more area we can fight this opioid crisis,” Smaltz says.

Governor Holcomb says he’s on board and will sign the legislation, which has passed in both the House and Senate.
