FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The Allen County Jail is now allowing visitation by video.
The Allen County Sheriff made the announcement Monday, stating that new video visitation services from GTL have been implemented to enable more frequent contact between inmates and their friends and family.
The jail has implemented two video solutions:
- The remote video solution, which allows loved ones to the use the internet to schedule and conduct video chats with inmates, similar to Skype or FaceTime.
- The second option is onsite video visitation, which allows an inmate’s friends and family to use stations at the Allen County Jail to video chat with the inmate. This option allows those without internet to still take advantage of the video chat option.
Video visitation has expanded to numerous U.S. correctional facilities and has multiple benefits, such as reducing inmate movement, decreasing the likelihood of contraband entering a facility, and enhancing security through better monitoring.
“Video visitation will save the taxpayers money by eliminating approximately 5,000 additional officer hours a year that can be reallocated where needed,” said Sheriff David Gladieux in a press release. “It will also be more secure, since we are not moving inmates and visitors through the confinement facility.”
