EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP): The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is hosting a discussion on the constitutional issues raised by its challenge to a church's plan to display dozens of crosses on Evansville's riverfront.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports Wednesday's “Religion on the Public Square” panel discussion at Evansville's Central Library will address multiple viewpoints on the First Amendment's rights to expression and religion.
ACLU of Indiana executive director Jane Henegar says the group looks forward “to a civil and stimulating conversation.”
The ACLU filed suit on behalf of two Evansville residents last year after the city approved allowing West Side Christian Church to display about 30 6-foot tall crosses on public land along Evansville's downtown riverfront.
A federal judge barred the display, but several churches appealed that ruling.
