ALBION, Ind. (WOWO) — An Albion couple has turned the supernatural into storytelling with the release of their new book, Haunted Noble County, Indiana.

Mark R. Hunter and his wife, Emily Hunter, spent more than a year researching and collecting ghost stories for the book, which was published by The History Press under Arcadia Publishing’s Haunted America series. Their first author appearance will be Sept. 20 at the Albion Fall Celebration on the Courthouse Square.

“Every area has ghost stories,” Mark said. “We just put them together and added pictures.”

The book features well-known local legends such as Spook Hill, which inspired a poem by Indiana’s former poet laureate, along with stories rooted in history, including the hanging of a horse thief and accused murderer near Ligonier’s Diamond Hill. Others, like “The Thing in the Basement,” were shared directly with the authors by Noble County residents.

“I’ve seen a few things, and I keep an open mind,” Mark said. “But most of the people we talked to directly are absolutely convinced they saw something supernatural, and we respect that.”

While the couple found no ghost stories connected to the atmospheric Noble County Jail Museum, they documented other historical sites said to be haunted, including the former Kneipp Springs Sanitarium in Rome City, the Strand Theater in Kendallville, and several local libraries.

Copies of Haunted Noble County, Indiana, are available online through Arcadia Publishing, the Hunters’ website at markrhunter.com, and at retail locations throughout the county.

The book adds to the Hunters’ growing list of local history works, including Smoky Days and Sleepless Nights: A Century or So with the Albion Fire Department and Images of America: Albion and Noble County. Mark Hunter has also written several novels, short stories, and humor books, many set in Indiana.

Mark works as a 911 dispatcher, while Emily is a trail guide at Pokagon State Park. The couple shares updates through their website, blog, and social media.
