Alzheimer Cases on the Rise in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO): A new report says the number of Hoosiers suffering with Alzheimer‘s Disease is rising.

Alzheimer‘s Association of Greater Indiana Senior Specialist Dustin Ziegler says 110,000 Hoosiers are now affected by the ailment. It‘s the sixth leading cause of death and fifth leading cause of death of seniors over 65 nationwide. 

About 5.3 million Americans are affected by the ailment and Ziegler says that number will triple in the next decade. That information can be found in the 2015 Alzheimer‘s Disease Facts and Figures report. AAGI is preparing for its statewide educational conference May 1st in Indianapolis.

Ziegler says the goal is to continue to raise public awareness about the ailment and share information with families and the public. He says the association helps people navigate their way through the various issues created by Alzheimer‘s and come up with ways that families can cope.
