American Red Cross looking for donors during winter months

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) – The American Red Cross is urging donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets to help keep the blood supply strong this winter.

Type O negative blood donors and those giving platelets are especially in need at the moment.

The American Red Cross says the beginning of the year is one of the most difficult times to collect blood products as severe weather happens and blood drives often face cancellations. They say donors are also more likely to cancel their donation appointments during the winter months as they recover from the cold and flu.

For the sixth year, the American Red Cross and the NFL have partnered to put together a giveaway. Donors who give blood now through January 26 of this year will be entered into a giveaway for a chance to win a trip to this year’s Super Bowl.

Those interested in making a donation can visit the American Red Cross website, download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
