Authorities: 18 Puppies Found in Freezer at Muncie Home

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) – Authorities say 18 puppies and six reptiles were found in a freezer at a Muncie house where 46 dogs were rescued.

The dogs were taken from the home of 23-year-old Jacob Ryan Pelfrey on Wednesday. Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckinpaugh says the shelter was told about “horrific'' conditions at the home by a utility worker Tuesday.

Peckinpaugh says most of the dogs were living in waste-filled cages behind the house, but they did not appear emaciated. He described the case as “a mix between a hoarder and a puppy mill.''

Pelfrey was being held at the Delaware County jail as of Wednesday night on a $65,000 bond. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.
