INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A proposal for changing how A-F grades are assigned to Indiana schools is set to go before the State Board of Education.

The board is scheduled to discuss but not take action Wednesday on the proposal from Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz. Under the option, state officials would give individual schools an updated A-F grade only if it was improved from the previous year.

Education Department officials say that's because student standardized test scores are expected to drop with changes to the ISTEP exam taken this spring and they want schools to have more transition time.

The board dominated by appointees of Republican Gov. Mike Pence is also scheduled to elect a vice chairman who will have joint responsibility with Ritz for the panel's agenda.
