Centaur Closing NW Indiana Betting Parlor in March

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) – The owner of Indiana's two horse racing tracks is closing its off-track betting parlor in northwestern Indiana because of slow business.

Centaur Gaming said Monday its site in Merrillville will close March 15. The site opened in 1995 and employs 33 people.

Centaur Gaming president and chief operating officer Jim Brown says business declines “have made it no longer viable to maintain an off-track betting operation in the area.”

Brown says wagering at the site has fallen by more than 50 percent during the last 10 years.

Centaur owns Hoosier Park in Anderson and Indiana Grand in Shelbyville. It also operates Winner's Circle Brewpub & OTBs in Indianapolis and Shelbyville and plans to open a third outside Fort Wayne, but says one would not work in Merrillville.
