Central Indiana Woman Sentenced in Son’s Drowning

FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP): A central Indiana woman has been sentenced to 55 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill for the drowning death of her 3-year-old son.

A Johnson County judge approved the plea agreement Thursday for 35-year-old Amanda Smith of Trafalgar in the February 2012 death of Jacob Smith.

Jacob was in foster care but was on a court-ordered overnight visit with Smith when authorities say she drowned him in a bathtub.

Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper tells The Indianapolis Star that Smith told the judge that she believed God directed her to kill Jacob.

Experts had diagnosed Smith as schizophrenic and her attorney had been planning to pursue an insanity defense.

Smith is to receive mental health treatment while confined with the Department of Correction.
