HAMMOND, Ind. (WOWO): Plans for a proposed new stadium for the Chicago Bears in northwest Indiana are moving forward, according to local officials.

Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. said the project gained momentum after Indiana Gov. Mike Braun helped secure approval from the Bears organization to continue discussions.

McDermott said the proposal would encompass roughly 300 acres in Hammond, including approximately 60 acres dedicated to the stadium itself.

If completed, the project would relocate the Bears’ home games from their current venue in Chicago to Indiana. However, officials noted the franchise would retain the Chicago Bears name despite the move.

Supporters say the development could bring significant economic activity, jobs and investment to northwest Indiana. The proposal remains in the planning stages, and details regarding financing, construction timelines and final approvals have not yet been announced.

The Bears have explored several stadium options in recent years as the team weighs its long-term future and facility needs. Further negotiations and approvals would be required before any relocation becomes official.
