Cold Case Arrest

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indianapolis police detectives have arrested a prison inmate in connection with a slaying 12 years ago.

WRTV-TV reported Thursday that 52-year-old Currie O’Bryant faces a preliminary charge of murder in connection with the 2000 slaying of 59-year-old John Rhoades.
Rhoades was found bound, beaten and fatally shot in the basement of a near north side home where officers were investigating an assault on a 76-year-old woman. The woman told investigators she was worried about Rhoades, a relative of hers.

Detectives say DNA tests led them to O’Bryant and the woman, now 88, identified him as her assailant.

O’Bryant is serving a 155-year sentence for shooting five people in 2002. Prison and Marion County Jail records did not indicate whether he has an attorney.
