Crews Boost Inspection of Indianapolis Manholes after Blasts

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ After a series of manhole explosions last week in Indianapolis, crews are doing added inspections of underground electrical equipment ahead of the city hosting the Final Four.

Indianapolis Power & Light had planned to inspect 200 to 300 manholes before the Final Four. After the explosions, the utility company asked for out-of-state crews so it can inspect more than 1,200 covers.

Manhole covers were shot into the air last week in a heavily trafficked section of the city's downtown, with the latest incident happening Thursday. Utility regulators have ordered an investigation. More than a dozen such incidents have happened in the last decade.

The Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament takes place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on April 4 and 6.
