INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The top Democrat in the Indiana House will lead an effort next week to delete a clause prohibiting civil unions from a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage.

The full House could consider possible changes to the proposed amendment as soon as Monday. House minority leader Scott Pelath said Friday he will offer an amendment on behalf of House Democrats to strip the civil unions clause from the resolution.

The House elections committee approved the measure on a party-line vote this week. But concerns have persisted about the second part of the measure, which bans civil unions and could bar employer benefits for same-sex couples.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long said Friday the resolution would go to the Senate Judiciary Committee if it clears the House.
