INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A 89-year-old Indianapolis woman whose husband served in World War II has received his dog tags after they were lost overseas more than seven decades ago.

The soldier identification tags were discovered last summer by a man using a metal detector near a beach in Normandy, France. The tags eventually were sent to a veterans group in Indiana, and then delivered to Catherine Wallace at her Indianapolis retirement home on Thursday.

Indianapolis Fire Department Chief Ernest Malone also presented Wallace with a photo of her husband, James, who served the department for more than 20 years.

James Wallace joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and rose to the rank of staff sergeant in two years. After serving in France, he eventually returned to Indianapolis, where he died in 1997.
