Elkhart Store Gunman had Theft Conviction

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) – The northern Indiana man who police say fatally shot two women in a supermarket was convicted four years ago of stealing from another store in the same supermarket chain.

Court records show 22-year-old Shawn Walter Bair of Elkhart was charged with theft in January 2010 for stealing from a Martin's Super Market store in Elkhart. Court records show it was a different store than the one where Wednesday's shootings occurred.

Bair was sentenced to six months after pleading guilty to theft and ordered to pay $6 in restitution.

State Police say Bair entered a Martin's Super Market in Elkhart late Wednesday and fatally shot a 20-year-old store employee and a 44-year-old shopper.

Two Elkhart officers killed Bair as he pointed a gun at the store's manager.
