Escapee Back in Hospital After Fall in Jail Restroom

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): A jail inmate who was recaptured after overpowering a sheriff's deputy and stealing her police cruiser has suffered serious head injuries in a fall behind bars.

Tippecanoe County Sheriff Barry Richard says correctional officers found 25-year-old Marcus Bramlett injured in a restroom Monday night. He was taken to a Lafayette hospital.

Richard says he believes Bramlett was trying to hurt himself. Bramlett was being held in a padded cell.

Maj. Charlie Williams tells the Journal & Courier that Bramlett was trying to climb a sewer pipe inside the restroom.

Bramlett escaped Friday and surrendered a day later. Court records say he was being returned from a hospital when he struck a deputy multiple times. The deputy exited the vehicle after Bramlett allegedly reached for her gun.
