Former Wabash County Bookkeeper Arrested on Five Felony Counts

WABASH, Ind. (WOWO): Friday morning, a criminal investigation by Indiana State Police resulted in the arrest of 44-year-old Sara Chamberlain, of Urbana.

She is a former bookkeeper for the Wabash County Clerk’s Office and was arrested on five felony charges for three counts of theft, one count of official misconduct, and one count for corrupt business influence.

In September of 2013, detectives started an investigation after an audit allegedly revealed missing funds in accounts controlled by the Wabash County Clerk’s Office.

Chamberlain’s bookkeeping responsibilities required her to collect various fees paid to the clerk’s office. She was also required to keep track of the fees paid, but according to police, she purportedly misrepresented the dollar amount and allegedly deposited some of the funds into her personal bank account.

Further investigation revealed that that from 2011 until September of 2013 Chamberlain allegedly stole approximately $75,000.

She’s now in the Wabash County Jail with a surety bond of $12,500 plus an additional $1,000.
