INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A prominent Indiana business leader is voicing concern that Governor Mike Pence's stance prioritizing religious freedom over LGBT rights will not help “close the book'' on the bitter debate dividing the state.

Indiana Chamber of Commerce CEO Kevin Brinegar told The Associated Press in an interview that he had hoped Pence would announce support for statewide civil rights protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The Republican governor instead said during his State of the State speech that he would prioritize religious freedom over discrimination protections.

Business leaders worry that the debate harms the state's reputation and diminishes the ability of businesses to attract talented employees.

Pence spokesman Matt Lloyd says the governor will carefully consider any legislation lawmakers may send to him.
