Gun Reform Unlikely in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): President Obama is urging federal and state action on gun control in the wake of Thursday's shooting spree at an Oregon college.

But Indiana appears unlikely to take him up on it, and if anything might go the opposite direction. It's been years since anyone even introduced a bill to restrict guns in Indiana, much less got a hearing on it.

Legislators have passed bills increasing prison sentences for some gun crimes, and slightly loosening restrictions on gun owners.

Lawmakers legalized sawed-off shotguns this year. Last year, they made an exception to gun bans on school property if the weapon stays locked in your trunk.

Seymour Representative Jim Lucas was a House sponsor of both bills, and is perhaps the legislature's most vocal advocate for gun rights. He argues removing restrictions on carrying guns would enable more people to defend themselves, while gun control laws wouldn't make people any safer.

Lucas plans to reintroduce a “constitutional carry” bill in 2016 eliminating the need for a carry permit.
He argues if you're not legally barred from owning a gun, you shouldn't have to demonstrate a reason to carry it. The bill didn't receive a hearing this year.
