Hoosier Woman Wounded in Shooting had Admitted Fraud

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Police in northern Indiana are investigating whether a shooting that wounded a woman in her home is related to her pleading guilty to taking part in a scheme to file bogus tax returns for $3.5 million in fraudulent refunds.

South Bend police Capt. Phil Trent said Tuesday investigators are trying to determine why 32-year-old Gigi Riley was shot twice Monday. He says home invasions usually involve robbery.

Trent said Tuesday the gunman broke into the home, shot Riley and left without taking anything.

The South Bend Tribune reports Riley pleaded guilty in February to federal charges of working with others to submit nearly 1,200 fictitious tax returns. She also agreed to testify during any trials.

Five others charged in the scheme are scheduled to face trial in October.
