INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana's budget chief says the government shutdown shouldn't cost the state much federal funding as long as it doesn't last too long.
 
Office of Management and Budget Director Chris Atkins tells WIBC-FM  the state's cash reserves will keep many programs going up to a month before running short. 
 
He says some federally funded programs – such as The National Guard – are reimbursed after the fact. The state will dip into its surplus to put Guardsmen on the state payroll for up to a week and reevaluate if the shutdown is still going.
 
Funding for Medicaid, highways and jobless benefits isn't affected.
 
Atkins says he expects the economic impact of the shutdown to be “small but manageable” but the state will closely monitor the impact on defense contractors.
