Indiana camp: Girl, 11, dies after tree falls on cabin

BENNINGTON, Ind. (AP): A southeastern Indiana camp says an 11-year-old girl has died after lightning struck a tree and sent it into her cabin.

Spokesman Jeff Goldstein of Camp Livingston says the tree fell about 3 a.m. into a cabin with the girl, three adult camp counselors and other campers inside. He says emergency responders arrived within minutes at the camp in Bennington, about 40 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio.

An email message posted on the Jewish camp’s Facebook page says no other children or staff were injured. It said the girl’s name would not be released.

The message says a team of grief counselors was headed to the camp.

Several rounds of storms passed through Switzerland County early Tuesday. The National Weather Service warned of high winds, heavy rain and frequent lightning.
