Indiana County’s Courthouse Tower Tree Getting Checkup

GREENSBURG, Ind. (AP) _ Checking on the health of a tree growing from the courthouse clock tower in southeastern Indiana's Decatur County was among the reasons crews dangled from a crane to inspect the 154-year-old building.

County Commissioner Rick Nobbe says this week's assessment will give officials information on short- and long-term repairs needed for the courthouse in downtown Greensburg.

The Greensburg Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1KU2FEX ) the present-day courthouse tree appeared about a century ago. It has long been a symbol and tourist attraction for the community.

Commissioners President John Richards says the tree evaluation will cost about $1,800 of the $50,000 building assessment. He says the tree checkup is an important part of project.
