INDIANA (WOWO) – As Hoosiers head to lakes and rivers this summer, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is reminding boaters to put safety first.

Conservation officers say life jackets remain one of the most important pieces of safety equipment and are strongly encouraged for everyone on board.

Officials also warn against distracted or impaired boating, noting that alcohol continues to be a major factor in serious water accidents.

Beginning July 1, Indiana will require boat operators to wear a kill switch cord while driving. The device shuts off the engine if the operator is thrown overboard, helping prevent dangerous runaway boats and potential injuries.
