INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – An area of Indianapolis' east side where nearly half of residents live in poverty and unemployment is just under 25 percent has been chosen for a federal program that seeks to increase economic activity, improve education and health and reduce violent crime.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro announced Tuesday the Indianapolis area was among eight newly designated Promise Zones that will receive priority access to federal investments including staffing.

The Indianapolis area primarily south and east of Interstate 70 holds a population of 17,000 people. A redevelopment plan calls for creating jobs and affordable housing, increased economic activity, lower crime and better educational opportunities.
