INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The federal government says more than 47,700 Indiana residents have signed up for private insurance under the health care law during the first four months of enrollment.

The new total through Feb. 1 released Wednesday is an increase of more than 17,000, or 57 percent, from 30,400 enrollees through late December. 

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services spokeswoman Elizabeth Schinderle says the government has “ramped up education and outreach efforts to drive enrollment.” She says outreach is occurring in every state, including Indiana, “with a particular emphasis on areas with the highest population of the uninsured.”

Those efforts include television ads featuring former NBA stars Magic Johnson and Alonzo Mourning promoting enrollment.

About 900,000 Indiana residents lack health insurance.
